Buyer's Guide: How to Purchase Cameras

Buying a camera device can be daunting in today's age especially when the market has so much to offer in terms of type and specification of the device.

Do you need a camera which offers good megapixel count or do you need a camera which offers less MP count but a good optical zoom lens system or do you even need to buy a camera device when there are quickly evolving and powerful smartphone camera available.

Well, these can be the basic questions which might confuse you before going ahead and  buy a camera and that's why we present our comprehensive camera buying guide so that you can make an informed decision and walk away with a camera which is greatly suited to  your photography needs.

Camera 101 - Megapixels, Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, Sensor

Before discussing decision making variables for buying a camera, you should be aware of the basic camera terminology so that you can understand the technical specifications well and how do they affect camera performance so that you can justify your camera purchase according to your needs.

Below we talk about various technical terms associated with photography that together plays a vital role in clicking crisp and sharp images. Along with the overview, we also discuss how do they affect a photo and what should be the values that you ought to be looking while buying.

  • Megapixels- Images are made up of small dots knows as pixels, when you have an image which is made up of 1 million pixels you've got a Megapixel. A camera that is able to capture 12 Million pixels in an image is called a 12 Megapixel camera. Now, Megapixels alone don't determine the quality of the image that you capture. Albeit, the amount of Megapixels does determine how large you can print the captured images and the amount to which cropping can be done without making images blurry or grainy. Usually, a 10MP to 12 MP resolution is always sufficient to have a great picture quality, hence before you consider a large Megapixel count as the only MVP of the camera, stop right there as the sensor size and lens quality holds more importance in determining the quality of the picture
  • Aperture -Aperture can be explained as the opening that allows more or less light to pass through the camera lens to reach the camera sensor. The greater the aperture, the more light is bound to reach the camera sensor thus capturing a bright image and vice-versa. The aperture of a camera affects its exposure and depth of field. Depth of field is the relative difference in the focus of the subject and its background. A shallow depth of field implies that the background will be completely out of focus also known as "bokeh" effect. A Large aperture helps in producing shallow depth of field which often the desirable trait for portraits. Apertures are measured in "f-numbers" for eg: f2.8, f8 etc. A smaller f number implies greater aperture and hence often the desirable aspect in capturing images in a darker environment.
  • ISO – ISO refers to the range of sensitivity of the camera’s sensor. The less the ISO number, the less the camera’s sensor is sensitive to light. It is recommended to use lower ISO in bright lighting and higher ISO in dark conditions although in dark lighting conditions, one may choose higher ISO but it comes at a cost of higher amount of noise in the image hence you should choose ISO setting carefully. A common set of ISO values are ISO100(lower ISO), ISO 200, ISO400, ISO800, ISO1600, ISO3200, ISO6400(higher ISO). A ISO200 implies that the camera’s sensor is twice sensitive as compared to when on ISO100 setting. ISO setting is used with shutter speed setting to optimize the quality of the picture in a specific situation, hence the diverse the camera’s ISO range is becomes a significant factor while buying.
  • Shutter Speed- Camera shutter speed or exposure time is essentially the length of time for which the camera lens allows the light to enter through it via camera's shutter and expose the sensor. The shutter speed is measured, obviously in seconds. An example of camera's shutter speed is 1/2500s which implies that the camera's sensor was exposed to light only for 1/2500 fraction of a second. A fast shutter speed is used to capture rapidly moving subjects, a fast shutter speed essentially freezes fast motion subjects. Whereas, a slow shutter speed can be used to capture objects in motion to give an intentional motion blur effect to them for creative purposes. Slow shutter speeds are used with ISO in low light conditions for allowing more light to pass through the .Having said all that, the shutter speed plays a significant role along with aperture and ISO to produce the desired images. A camera that has a great shutter speed range is usually preferred to have more control in different light conditions.
  • Sensor size – The heart of every camera device is the image sensor, an image sensor is nothing but an electronics device which is used to convert an optical image into a digital one with the help of an image processor. An image sensor consists of light sensitive spots called photosites which are illuminated by the light entering through the camera lens thus recording the information about the image. The larger the size of the image sensor, the greater amount of light will fall on it thus recording more detailed information about the subject’s image, incorporating less noise and more dynamic range. Sensors come in various sizes suited to the unit in which they have to be packed. The sensor size affects image dynamics by affecting its aspect ratio and crop factor. Various sensor sizes available are 1/2.5”, 1/3”, 1/2.3”, 1”, APS-C, APS-H and Full frame. A thumb rule is that the bigger the sensor the better is image quality that the camera would produce hence keep in mind this factor while making your choice.

Having looked upon various technical features and their consequences on the performance, let’s have a look over various kinds of best digital camera under 10000 available in the market these days, making use of different hardware according to specific needs.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W810 or even the DSC-W830 are great options to choose from. You can also try out the Canon IXUS 185, Kodak Pixpro, or the Nikon Coolpix W100. 2. What image quality is the best?

When looking to buy a budget-oriented camera, there is always a fear of image quality. But nowadays even budget devices come with excellent camera sensors and lenses. Today you can easily find budget-friendly devices with around 10 to 20-megapixel cameras.
Now, the number of megapixels does not always result in excellent quality photos. But, the higher the megapixels count, the larger the image you can print out. It would be best if you always looked for high megapixels as well as an excellent sensor and high-quality lenses. These three things combined deliver the best image quality.

3. What is the cheapest professional camera?

When it comes to buying the cheapest
professional camera, you must first know what it is you’re looking for. Do you want something professional yet easy to use or something that can be easily customizable with different lenses? You can try out options like Canon EOS 6D Mark II, Sony A7, Canon EOS RP, Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III, and many more. All of them come equipped with great lenses and sensors. But remember that high-quality professional cameras do not come under a specific or tight budget. If you want the best, you will have to spend more.

4. How do I choose the best camera?

When it comes to buying the best camera first, you need to ask yourself what do you need it for? If it is for professional work, then you will have to do some research, but if it is for casual usage, then you can get something more budget-oriented. You will also have to make a note of the speed and performance. For professional work, the ergonomics of the body design will come into play. Even for professional work, you will have to check if the camera has interchangeable lenses and image stabilization software.

When it comes to children, you want something that they can use with ease. Nikon Coolpix W100 and Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 are two great child-friendly cameras. They have great designs as well as easy to use interfaces.
You can also invest a bit more in something like the Sony DSC W830 or Canon IXUS 185 or Kodak Pixpro if you feel like your child has some real interest in photography and would like them to develop their skill even more. It also depends on how careful they are going to be with it.

This depends on which category of cameras you are looking at. If you’re searching for a budget-oriented camera, then the average cost will be around 10,000 to 15,000 INR. If you’re looking at the slightly high-end side of cameras, then you will need about 25,000 to 35,000 INR. If you want a full-blown professional camera with all the bells and whistles, then you will be required to shell out 50,000 INR to over 1 lakh. The high-end expensive professional cameras that come with everything usually begin at 1 lakh INR or above.

8. What are the specifications of a camera needed for personal use?

Some things to keep in mind while looking for a camera are the ISO or International Organization for Standardization. This describes how light-sensitive your camera’s sensor is. The higher the ISO, the brighter will be the image. Shutter speed is another thing you need to keep in mind as the higher rate means the camera will capture the picture in a shorter period of time. The lens also plays a vital role in the overall image quality along with the number of megapixels the camera can capture.

9. Is a point and shoot camera worth buying?

Point and shoot cameras are now better than ever, but with one major drawback is that phones are better than them. Companies do not invest in point and shoot cameras as mobile phones are now better equipped with high megapixel cameras and great sensors. Mobile phones that come at the price of a point and shoot camera are better equipped to take the photos you need. Also, with a point and shoot camera, you will need a special carrying case or kit to keep it safe as well as clean. Relying on your phone will be a better option.
