The bezels on the device are not that distracting, and there is a water drop notch on the top that holds the front-facing 16MP camera

The body of the phone is made to give off that premium look, but it does not have a glass back. The back is made from plastic and has an eye-catching design with vertical pinstripes on the back.

The phone is available in three colours That Green, That Blue and That White. The phone comes packed with the MediaTek Helio G80 chipset which is a good mid-range chipset. It can handle every application with relative ease, and switching between apps will be lag-free. The chipset can handle even demanding games but at low settings.

The OS here is Realme UI over Android 10, which delivers excellent performance. The phone comes with 128GB of internal storage and 4Gb of RAM. The device also has a triple card slot that allows two sim cards and a microSD card for expanding the storage.

The phone has a plastic body with a rear gradient finish. It is available in two finishes, Fantasy White and Mystery Black.  The body has been designed to give it an ergonomic feel and to make it look visually thinner.

The device is powered by the Mediatek Helio P35 chipset which is quite powerful and blazes through everyday tasks with ease. ColorOS 6.1.2 isn’t very demanding or buggy.

The OS and the processor complement each other nicely.  It can also handle light gaming with the graphical settings set to low. The chipset is Mediatek’s mid-range chip, and there are no lags or bugs while using standard apps.

The phone has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The phone also has a triple card slot setup which allows the memory to be expanded to 256GB of storage via a microSD card. This setup ensures the phone runs smoothly and never feels laggy.

It comes in seven  colours Cosmic Purple, Neptune Blue, Space Black, Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue, Ruby Red Moonlight White. The phone is encased in Gorilla Glass 5 both on the front as well as the back

This gives the phone a much more premium feel and look. The back also has a light gradient finish.

The phone has a 6.30 inches display which is a Full HD+ panel. The viewing angles are great, and the screen is bright and crisp. This makes the content viewing experience incredible.

There is a small water drop notch on the display that holds the front-facing camera as well as the tiny LED notification light.

The phone has the essential body of every Redmi phone with an Infrared emitter on the top and the headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker at the bottom.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset which is a potent mid-range chipset. This, along with the lag-free MIUI 10, delivers a lag-free experience. The device comes with Android 9 out of the box on which the company’s MIUI 10 runs. The chipset can easily handle even demanding games on the lowest settings.

The Infinix Hot 9 Pro was launched with its brother the Infinix Hot 9. Both phones are practically the same with just a difference in the camera module.

The Infinix Hot 9 Pro comes with a gradient finish on the back, but since it is made from plastic, it does not have that premium feel to it. It comes in two colour formats, Ocean Wave or Violet.

The body does have a study design with a headphone jack, MicroUSB port, and the speakers on the bottom.

The phone has a 6.60 inches display with an HD+ LCD IPS panel. This gives viewing content a great feel with the right colour and saturation.

Something that sets this camera apart from the others in this price range is the punch-hole camera it has. This punch-hole camera is not in the centre of the screen but to the side, unlike the Redmi Note 9 Pro.

This makes it less distracting when viewing content or binge-watching for hours. There is the traditional fingerprint scanner at the rear of the phone. The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio P22 which is a decent mid-range chipset. But buyers beware this chipset cannot handle massive games even on the lowest settings.

Normal apps open instantly, and the XOS UI makes for a smooth and lag-free experience. Switching between apps is also very fast, and there is no lag or stutter in everyday use. The phone comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

This isn’t an issue as the device has a triple card setup with two sim cards and one MicroSD slot. The storage can be expanded to 256GB via a microSD card. The phone comes with a quad-camera setup with the main being a 48MP followed by two 2MP cameras for depth and macro. The fourth camera is a low light sensor.

At the front of the camera is an 8MP selfie camera that also works for the face unlock. The overall camera performance of the phone is stellar with crisp, bright images being captured.

The saturation, vibrant, and colours look natural and not washed out or overexposed. The phone has a 5000mAh battery that can keep it going for over a day on a single charge. However, the phone does not support fast charging.

Pros

  • Quad-camera setup
  • 5000mAh battery

Cons

  • MediaTek Helio P22 processor

7. Honor 8X

Honor 8X Blue

Specifications

  • Screen Size: 6.50 inches
  • Display Type: Full HD+ IPS LCD
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 710
  • RAM Size: 4GB
  • Storage Size: 64GB
  • Back cameras: 20MP + 2MP
  • OS: Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.2
  • Battery Size: 3750mAh
  • Weight: 175 grams

The Honor 8X comes in three colour choices, black, blue, or red. It has a 6.50 inches display that is a Full HD+ IPS LCD panel. The phone has a screen-to-body ratio of 91%, which is huge.

This also means that the content viewing experience will be better than others. The software by default also provides more saturation to the colours displayed on the screen to mimic the appearance of an AMOLED display

The large screen-to-body ratio is thanks to the thin bezels. This is one budget-oriented phone that has a small notch on the front instead of a punch-hole or a water drop notch.

The phone comes equipped with a setting that lets you hide the notch. The phone has a fingerprint scanner as well as face unlock. Both are extremely fast at unlocking the phone.

One unique feature that the Honor 8X has is that you do not need to hit the power button before using the face unlock feature. The user simply can bring the phone up to their face, and it will open, which is extremely convenient.

The device is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 710, which is an extremely efficient processor. Along with the 4GB of RAM and the UI, the phone feels buttery smooth with no lag or stuttering. Multitasking on the phone with several apps open is also another lag-free experience. The Kirin 710 can be compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset when it comes to performance.

Unfortunately, this is not a gaming phone, and demanding games can only be played at the lowest settings. The chipset is also very battery efficient, which is why the battery in the device is only 3750mAh. The phone charges via the MicroUSB port at the bottom. It only supports 10W charging.

The phone comes with an internal storage of 64GB which can easily be expanded to 400GB using a microSD card. The phone has a triple sim card tray with a dedicated slot for a microSD card.

The phone comes with a dual-camera setup on the back. The primary camera is 20MP and the second is 2MP forth depth. The main camera can support video recording up to 1080p at 60fps. The phone also has a headphone jack at the bottom along with the speaker.

8. Motorola One Vision

Motorola One Vision Sapphire Gradient

Specifications

  • Screen Size: 6.30 inches
  • Display Type: IPS LCD
  • Front camera: 25MP
  • Processor: Samsung Exynos 9609
  • RAM Size: 4GB
  • Storage Size: 128GB
  • Back cameras: 48MP + 5MP
  • OS: Android Pie 9
  • Battery Size: 3500mAh
  • Weight: 430 g

The Motorola One Vision comes with two choices of colour gradients Bronze Gradient or Sapphire Gradient. It has a 6.30 inches IPS LCD. The feature that makes this phone stand out from the rest is the aspect ratio.

The aspect ratio is 21:9, which makes the phone look tall. The viewing angles are great, and the colours are vibrant. The bezels across the phone are minimal, which makes the display great for content consumption.

The idea behind this particular design was to give the viewer a cinematic feel while viewing content on the phone.

There is a punch-hole camera on the corner of the screen which due to the tall and narrow nature of the phone is quite distracting.

Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 9609 processor powers the phone. This, along with the stock Android and 4GB of RAM, provides a lag-free and fast user experience.

Switching between apps is lag-free, and even demanding games can run on the lowest settings. Since there is no custom UI, the settings and the overall phone interface looks and feels quite clean and neat. Unlike other phones that come with only 64GB of storage, the 4GB variant comes with 128GB of internal storage. It even has a hybrid sim card slot that can take one sim card and microSD or two sim cards.

One element that makes this phone stand out is the Motorola gestures or actions. A karate chop gesture will turn on or turn off the flashlight. A twist motion can quickly launch the camera app.

These settings can be accessed via the settings. The phone comes with a battery capacity of just 3500mAh. This means that you cannot use the phone for a whole day even with light usage on only a single charge. The Exynos 9609 is a battery efficient processor, but the 3500mAh battery is just too small. The phone does come with a 15W turbocharger in the box.

The back dual camera setup consists of 48MP + 5MP. The primary camera is 48MP and performs well in almost every lighting situation, and the 5MP is for macro shots. The combination of both does result in some impressive images with excellent brightness and detail. But, there is no wide-angle camera like the competition. The front camera is 25MP.

Pros

  • Stock Android with no custom UI
  • Camera quality is excellent for a dual-camera setup.
  • Night vision for great low light photos

Cons

  • The front punch-hole camera is quite distracting
  • Dual-camera setup
  • Android Pie 9

9. Huawei Y9 Prime 2019

Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 Sapphire Blue

Specifications

  • Screen Size: 6.59 inches
  • Display Type: TFT LCD LTPS
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Processor: Hisilicon Kirin 710F
  • RAM Size: 4GB
  • Storage Size: 128GB
  • Back cameras: 16MP + 8MP + 2MP
  • OS: Android 9
  • Battery Size: 4000mAh
  • Weight: 197 grams

At first glance, the two-tone design of the back of the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 will remind you of Google’s Pixel. The body is made from plastic, but the designers have made it feel like glass.

It comes in two colours, Emerald Green or Sapphire Blue. The phone has a huge display thanks to there not being a notch or punch-hole for the front-facing camera.

They have gone with pop-up camera setup. This lets the device have an uninterrupted display, a vibrant display, which is excellent for watching movies or online content.

The bezels are also minimal that makes the display look even more significant.

The chipset powering the device is the Kirin 710F chipset. Since the device uses stock Android Pie 9 with a light EMUI 9 skin on top, this makes the phone a breeze to use while multitasking. You can also play some heavy games on it in the lowest setting but remember this is not a gaming phone. The device will struggle if the game settings are pushed higher.

The phone comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The phone houses a hybrid sim tray which can be used to expand the storage if needed. It also has a headphone jack at the bottom of the phone next to the Type-C charging port.

The phone has a triple camera setup with the main being 16MP followed by an 8MP Ultra-wide and 2Mp for depth. The front pop-up camera is 16MP. Under direct sunlight, the photos are crisp and bright, and even in some low light situations, the camera AI does a good job. The pop-up mechanism has been tested for over 100,000 pops and pops out very quickly for those selfies.

The front-facing camera cannot be used for face unlock. Thankfully there is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that can rapidly speed up this process. The phone has a 4000mAh battery which can easily last a whole day thanks to the battery efficient Kirin 710F chipset. Even with heavy use, you will still have 20% battery by the end of the day.

Unfortunately, the phone does not support any form of fast charging. The phone will last you the whole day and can be charged overnight. The device comes with just bottom-firing speakers.

Pros

  • Pop-up camera
  • No distractions on the large display
  • Good battery backup

Cons

  • The Kirin 710F chipset
  • Average camera quality
  • Android Pie 9

10. Vivo Y15

The phone has a beautiful 6.35 inches display that is an HD+ panel. The colours are bright and vibrant, and the viewing angles are right. Even in direct sunlight, the screen is quite visible.

The content on display is sharp and bright. The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio P22 and is running on Android 9 Pie with the FunTouch OS. This makes the phone perform everyday tasks very smoothly.

Switching between apps as well as multitasking, is a lag-free experience. The phone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The phone has a triple sim card tray setup with one slot for a dedicated microSD card for expansion. The phone’s internal storage can be extended up to 256GB via a microSD card. The phone does have an Ultra-Game mode, but massive demanding games can only be played on the lowest setting for a stable lag-free experience.

The phone has a 16MP front-facing camera that sits in a water drop notch. The phone has a triple camera setup on the back with the main one being a 13MP with an 8MP Ultra-wide and a 2MP for depth. The camera performance is average with stunning, crisp, and bright photos in the right lighting conditions. Even when zoomed in the camera can retain a good amount of detail and sharpness.

The front camera is on par with the back one. The quality of the photos is average, and the user will have to turn off the beautiful features that are left on by default. The phone has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which is very responsive. The phone also has a face unlocking the front 16MP camera that triggers that.

Both are super-fast and very responsive. The only issue is the face unlock will require good lighting to work correctly. The phone is a massive 5000mAh battery which thanks to the MediaTek Helio P22 chipset can easily last you an entire day on a single charge. Unfortunately, the phone does not support fast charging and comes with a 5W charger in the box.

Pros

  • Massive 5000mAh battery
  • Premium look and feel
  • Fingerprint and face unlock extremely responsive

Cons

  • MicroUSB port, not Type-C
  • 5W charger in the box
  • Heating issue

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is a 16,000 phone worth buying?

Yes, the number of smartphones you can get for less than 16,000  has seen a considerable raise. But to be ahead of the competition companies need to make their smartphones better at this price range which they have done. Not only will you be getting a huge nearly bezel-less display but also a very good processor, triple or quad camera setup, massive battery, and in some cases even fast charging. The smartphones coming out at this price range can easily rival and in some cases, even beat the flagships of a few years ago when it comes to design and performance.

2. Is a 16,000 phone good for gaming?

Yes, and no. This depends on what games you are interested in playing. If it is light, then these phones can handle it with ease. When it comes to high-end games that demand an excellent processor, then these phones can treat them as well. But, they will be able to handle it only to a certain level of detail with limited frame rates. You will either have to use the lowest graphical setting or medium. The processors that come in these phones can handle demanding games but not to the full extent a flagship can handle them.

3. What is the best chipset for a phone under 16,000?

The current best Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset for this price range is the 600 series or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712. Most smartphones in this price range come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip that can easily handle every day to day task plus light to heavy gaming. When it comes to Mediatek, then the latest ones found on budget-oriented phones are the Helio P90 and P95. Even some older P series chips can be found on these budget devices. The only issue is the heating problem seen with most Mediatek chips. Consistency is also another field where Qualcomm is in the lead.

4. Which phone has the biggest battery capacity?

The phone with the biggest battery in this price point has to be the Samsung Galaxy M21 with a whopping 6000mAh battery. The design team at Samsung also implemented an excellent weight distribution system that does not make the phone feel like a brick. It does make the phone a bit chunkier than the rest of the competition, but the in-hand feel of the phone is the same. Most phones in this price range come with a 5000mAh battery. This is the standard battery capacity of mid-range phones. These phones are designed to last a whole day on a single charge.

5. Which phone has the most HD display?

Most phones in this price segment come with an HD, HD+, Full HD, or AMOLED display panel. The Samsung Galaxy M21 is the only one with a Super AMOLED display panel. The Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 8, and Honor 8X come with a Full HD+ display panel. The Realme Narzo 10, OPPO A31, Infinix Hot 9 Pro, Vivo Y15 come with an HD+ display. The rest comes with a basic HD panel. The difference between Full HD+ and HD+ is the resolution. While Full HD+ has a resolution of 1080p, HD+ has a resolution of 900p.
