With the advancement in the field of technology, the usage and consumption pattern of smartphones has also increased considerably in the decade or so.

As per a recent study conducted, it has been established that the number of smartphone users jumped from 2.5 Billion in 2016, 2.7 Billion in 2017, 2.9 Billion in 2018, 3.2 Billion in 2019, and 3.5 Billion in 2020.

The figure is estimated to reach 3.8 Billion by the end of 2021.

Smartphone usage also varies as per the age of the user. In 2017, it was registered that children under the age of 2 years spent an average of 42 minutes on smartphones

Infants who do not have the ability to process information effectively are also exposed to the ordeal of smartphones.

Children within the age group of 2-4 and 5-8 years, on the other hand, spent 2 hours and 39 minutes and 2 hours and 59 minutes respectively on an average only on mobile phones.

The figure increased by a substantial amount by the end of 2019.

Children within the age bracket of 8-12 and 13-18 years consumed a whopping 4 hours and 44 minutes and 7 hours and 22 minutes respectively on their mobile devices every day. 

This factor is of significant concern as mobile devices emit harmful radiation that affects human health adversely on many levels.

The radiation level generated by mobile devices depends on the brand and the manufacturer concerned. Some of the most prevalent mobile devices that generate a significant amount of radiation have been identified below:

  • More than 70% of people check their mobile devices within the first hour of waking up in the morning.
  • 56% of people check their mobile devices before going to sleep.
  • 48% of people are active on their mobile devices during the weekend.
  • Moreover, 51% of people check their mobile phones consistently while being on vacation.

According to a recent survey, 97 people out of 100 agreed to the fact that mobile phone usage and radiation damages human health. 

The most common diseases caused due to the exposure of mobile phones are listed below:

More than 97% of Doctors agree to the fact that smartphone usage disrupts human health in the long run based on the observations from their patients. 3% of Doctors disagreed with this fact.

Overutilization of mobile phones has increased issues related to fertility primarily for men. 

More than 30% of sperm is damaged due to radiation exposure from mobile phones. Smartphone usage also limits the functioning ability of the heart by 50%. 

WHO also reported that 40% of brain tumors are caused due to the utilization of smartphones! According to our survey, the effect generated on brain tumors is close to 76%.

How to limit the radiation factor emitted by smartphones?

There are several measures that can be incorporated to limit the ill effects of smartphones. People should avoid keeping their smartphones in their trouser pockets

Avoid using smartphones for an extended time period. The use of headphones and earbuds should also be limited. Women who are expecting should keep mobile devices away from their stomachs. 

Children should also avoid using smartphones, especially while attending classes and lectures. It is beneficial to take a break while using a smartphone every 20 minutes.

Various governing authorities should also take up the initiative to spread awareness about the disadvantage of smartphone consumption.

Various seminars and workshops should be conducted where the general public is educated about the limitations of smartphones

Mobile towers should be set up in isolated areas to eliminate issues related to radiation.

An Overall Analysis of Students and their Usage Consumption of Smartphones

Young adults who are primarily students are in considerable danger to the ill effects of smartphones. More than 48.6% of students use smartphones for more than 5 hours on weekdays alone

2.1% of students spend an hour or less, 10.3 % use it for 1-2 hours, 8.1% use it for 2-3 hours, 19.5% use it for 3-4 hours, and 11.5% use it for around 4-5 hours respectively

Such is our dependence on mobile devices. As per a recent survey, 634 independent students were asked to identify reasons for using smartphones. 

67% agreed to use their mobile devices for calling family members, 62% agreed to call friends, 83% acknowledged using mobile devices for texting, 67% use it for entertainment and 46% use it for tracking and covering news and other forms of information. 

Out of the sample size of 634 students, 89 individuals agreed to have experienced depression and 108 agreed to feel more anxious with the overutilization of mobile devices.

There has been a considerable rise in the cases and issues related to neck pain. More than 57% of the students did not have any problem related to neck pain

However, 63% of students consistently feel stress in their necks. Around 21% of students experienced on-off stress out of which 17% were frequent smartphone users

To limit neck pain issues, it is essential that students warm up their body and neck before using smartphones for an extended time period.

Only 6% of students admitted to stretching their necks at regular intervals while using smartphones for prolonged hours. 

It was recorded that only 12% of students take breaks from using smartphones while the remaining 88% of  students stay engaged on their mobile devices without any break.

The majority of health issues are generated by image sensors and microphones. Image sensors in mobile phones can affect the cardiovascular, eye, skin, and respiratory health of the human body. 

On the other hand, motion sensors can disrupt sleep patterns. Therefore, people should be aware of these issues before spending extended time on their smartphones.


Overutilization of any substance should be avoided. Such should also be the case with smartphones. Technology without a shadow of a doubt has helped us in more ways than one.

It has made things easier and more convenient for everyone. However, the limitations of the same must also be acknowledged in order to live a healthy and prosperous life.

Therefore, it is essential that every individual from different age groups should note down the drawbacks of smartphones and must allocate a specific time period of usage.

Make sure to change your posture regularly such that your spine and neck gets the rest it requires. Also, give your eyes and ears rest from time to time. 

Seek assistance from expert professionals if any condition is developed so that it can be treated on an immediate basis.

Moreover, initiatives should be carried out where people are informed about the limitations of smartphones such that it does not affect our health in the long run.
