PAN stands for Permanent account number. It is a unique identification card issued by the Income Tax Department of India.
It allocates a unique number to every taxpayer and helps in their identification. All the information on your tax transactions is under the same allotted number.
You need a PAN card for multiple purposes, like opening a bank account, issuing a debit/credit card, applying for loans, and others.

It also serves as proof of identity. In some cases, the use of a PAN card is mandatory like Foreign currency exchange or selling/buying of property, vehicle, and even jewellery. It is also necessary for filing IT returns and in the registration of GST. The validity of a PAN card is a lifetime; it never expires.
