Edited by Piyush

Motherboard connects all the computer parts. Various computer components, including hard drives, memory units, CPU, expansion cards, and other ports, are connected directly or via cables to the motherboard.

It is necessary to know about the model (product) and brand (manufacturer) of the motherboard to check its specs for the component it supports.

Additionally, information about the motherboard version number helps to look for BIOS firmware updates from the manufacturer's customer support website.

In contrast, its serial number allows the motherboard’s manufacturer to recognize a product and receive additional details such as its replacement and registration details.

It is easy to find various computer hardware such as RAM and graphic cards in the system, but finding out about the motherboard is quite a daunting task. If you plan to update drivers or check hardware compatibility, information about the motherboard’s number and model is inevitable.

Depending upon the motherboard brand and PC’s operating system, the method to seek motherboard details varies. But for the computers running a Windows operating system, it is relatively easy to get motherboard information. Here are some of the ways to look for motherboard information on Windows running PCs.

Run Command Prompt

By running the Command Prompt in Windows running PC’s, you can easily check your motherboard and other hardware stats. On a Windows 10 version running computer, all you need to do is type “cmd” in the taskbar's search field and hit "Enter."

You can also open Command Prompt using the Run shortcut- Windows + R. In the pop-up, type “cmd" and hit "Enter." Do ensure that you run Command Prompt as administrator.

As soon as the command window is open, prompt Windows Management Interface Command (WMIC) to identify the motherboard’s model, name, manufacturer, slot layout, and other features.

To do this, enter the following command into Command Prompt and hit "Enter." Make sure that there are no spaces between modifiers — separate them with a comma only.

The returned information checks out for the motherboard that your PC is using — the manufacturer's name, product details, and so on. Hence, without using third party tools or opening the case at the back of your PC, you have the basic details about your motherboard handy.

Run PowerShell

One of the quickest ways to open PowerShell is to use the Run window. Press Windows + R keys on the keyboard, type "PowerShell" and then hit "Enter." Alternatively, you can also use the search field on the taskbar. Click on the search field and type "Windows PowerShell."

After opening the PowerShell window, paste the following command and press "Enter."

The returned information will provide you with details about your motherboard, including manufacturer, product, serial number, and version.

Use System Information

If you are a novice PC user and don’t know how to use Command Prompt and PowerShell, then a system information app could help you gather details about the motherboard installed on your computer.

To open the System Information window from the Start menu, type “System Information” and hit enter, or else press “Windows + R” keys and type “.exe” in the Run window. After opening, on the extreme left, hover to the “System Summary” section and look for "System Model," displayed on the right side.

There you will find out about the type of motherboard your PC is having. It will also provide other helpful information about your PC, including system manufacturer, version, processor, BIOS version, etc.
