Reliance Jio entered the Indian market with the promise of introducing a new era of mobile communication. It started off with free voice and data plans,

providing excellent speeds on its network and offering no charges on calls or SMS. Jio also offers free nationwide roaming. People were eagerly waiting to lay their hands on a Jio sim and even chose to stand in long queues, days after its launch. With time, users got used to the high speed data but, complaints of lower speeds started to crop up.

But, before you try to increase the speed of your Jio connection, remember that Jio only works in places where 4G connections are supported. Your phone must support 4G connections and it must be VoLTE enabled to run a Jio sim.

Voice over LTE or VoLTE is a relatively new feature in the Indian market and it promises excellent audio quality when compared to normal voice calls. But, there is a drawback to this system.

It does not work on phones that do not support VoLTE and you need to keep your mobile data turned on at all times to enable VoLTE calls. Even if your phone is connected to a home Wi-Fi network, calls cannot be placed or received with a Jio Sim.

So, whenever you are using this connection, turn on mobile data to get access to all the services. Reliance Jio has introduced some of the best plans and most users were impressed with its free data and high speed internet connection. 

But, you have to remember that data speed depends on other factors such as the number of towers available in an area, its signal strength and the bandwidth utilized by your network provider. Every service provider offers connection on a specific band.

For example, Airtel offers 4G on Band 40 (2300MHz) and Vodafone utilizes Band 5 for its 4G connections (850MHz). Reliance Jio, on the other hand, offers 4G on Band 3, Band 5 and Band 40.

If you need to get the best coverage, your service provider should ideally be on Band 5 but, in that case, the speed won’t be impressive. And, if it is on Band 40, data speed will be brilliant but, the connection will be weak.

Smartphones are equipped to automatically switch bands according to the signal strength available in an area and as a result, Reliance Jio keeps shifting from very good speed to low speed in different areas. Therefore, to get better speed, the LTE band must be controlled.

Solution #1: Locking Certain Aspects

Locking the LTE Band to 40

Since your phone will automatically choose the best signal strength available in an area, there is no need to bother about this. All you need to think about is the data speed. To lock your phone at the maximum bandwidth, follow these simple steps. 

Dial *#*#4636#*#*. Go to Phone information from the given options. Select ‘Set preferred network type’ and then go to ‘LTE only’. But, this method is slightly cumbersome and may or may not give you the best results because with a change of location, the phone cannot automatically switch to the best signal strength and the speed will again drop. So, you might have to again change the band to get best coverage.

Locking LTE Band in Qualcomm Processor

Download Shortcut Master (Lite) app from Google Play Store and install it in your Android phone. Go to Menu > Search. Now type ‘Service Menu’ or ‘Engineering Mode’ and search. Open ‘if found and access to change LTE bands’.

Locking LTE Band for MediaTek Processor

If you want to improve Jio speed on a MediaTek processor, you have to install MTK Engineering mode app from the Google Play Store. Run the app and go to MTK Settings. Now select Band Mode. Choose the sim slot where you have the Jio Sim. Select LTE mode.

Click on Band 40 for maximum speed. Pick Band 5 if you are looking for best coverage. Save the changes and you are likely to experience better internet speed on your Jio connection.

Solution #2: Change APN Settings For jio speed increase

If you are looking for maximum speed on your Jio internet connection, change the Jio APN settings. To change the APN, go to Settings on your phone. Select ‘Mobile Networks’ from the list. Click on the sim slot of Jio and go to the Menu on the top right hand corner of your phone.
