How to Remove Header and Footer in MS Word

Edited by Piyush

The top margin and bottom margin of a page are known as the header and footer sections.

These tools are available in Microsoft Word and help to write or include extra details about the document that will be available to every page of the entire file.

These are used to include information such as the name of the document creator, the overall count of pages in the document, the title of the file, or the type of document.

These sections are separate from the main text and can be included from the insert section of the built-in options available in Microsoft word. Inserting header and footer is very easy and convenient.

However, there are various methods to remove the header and footers as per its need in the document. Typically, double-clicking the footer or header section, and then selecting the option of removing them at once is a straightforward method.

However, if a document contains multiple headers and various kinds of footers, removing them at once becomes difficult, but the process is not so complicated for users to learn to remove the ‘Header and Footer section’ in the active document.

Removing the Header & Footer for Selected Pages

Removing a footer or header part for selected pages is a complicated process. This is because headers and footers are considered a part of the basic design. Microsoft Word does not modify changes to a specific page layout.

Removing the Header & Footer for Selected Pages

In Microsoft Word, the entire document is regarded as one large section, and one single feature cannot be applied to different sections of the document. But if you need to do it, follow these steps:

  1. 1
Create a separate section in the document, even if it is just for a page. The page layout can be changed to landscape orientation before modifying the part or adding a new section.
  2. 2
Place the cursor at the end of each page on which you want to remove the header or footer sections.
  3. 3
In the layout option available in Microsoft Word, select the ‘Brakes button’ and in the dropdown menu, select the ‘next page’ option. This action in Microsoft Word is useful for creating a section break. A new section will appear on the next page, where the cursor was placed.
  4. 4
Next, tap twice on the area of the header or footer, which needs to be removed on that particular page. On the ‘Design tab’ of Microsoft Word, on the header and footer tools area, select ‘linked to the previous’ button.
  5. 5
Now the link between the prior section of the header and footer is broken. If you want to both the header and footer from a part, then this process may be repeated for the links to previous sections of the pages individually.
