There are times when we forget our Windows 10 admin password and are unable to login to our desktop. Basic features like installing any software, exploring our files and folders, etc. come to a halt.

Though Microsoft gives us a few options, however tricky, they are doable. Here we have a list of the six ways to reset our forgotten Windows password for the administrator account. Let’s dive into it!

Password Reset Disk

Using a password reset disk

According to Microsoft, a password reset disk is the recommended method of resetting one’s lost Windows password. However, the only disadvantage of using a Windows 10 password reset disk is that it needs to be created before the password is lost.

6 Ways to Reset Forgotten Password

But if you don’t have a password reset disk already made and have forgotten your password, then check for other alternative methods.

  1. 1
On start-up of Windows 10, click on your account in the login screen. Try typing an incorrect password to log on. After a failed login attempt, just below the password field, the ‘Reset Password’ button will appear.
  2. 2
On clicking the ‘Reset Password’ link, Windows 10 will launch a new window, namely, the ‘Password Reset Wizard’. After inserting your password reset disk, click on Next to go to the next step.
  3. 3
In the new window, select your password reset disk, where the file ‘userkey.psw’ is stored. Then, click on Next.
  4. 4
Please select a new password for your account and fill it in the fields given. Also, provide a password hint for yourself for when you forget your password again.
  5. 5
When the process ends successfully, a confirmation window with the message “You’ve successfully reset the password for this user account.” will appear. You can close the password reset wizard by clicking on Finish.

Attempt to login using Other Sign-in Option

You can open an elevated Command Prompt window to reset your Windows 10 password if you can somehow login to Windows 10 with the picture password, pincode or any other admin account.
  2. 2
Just press ‘Windows key + X’ on the keyboard to access the Quick access menu. There, click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)’ option.
  3. 3
Type net user ‘account_name’ ‘new_password ‘into the command prompt in order to reset your lost password. Replace your username and new desired password into the place of account_name and new_password respectively.
  4. 4
    Press Enter.

Resetting Microsoft Account Password Online

Most people nowadays, login to their Windows Profile using a Microsoft account. If you forget your Microsoft Account password, use another device to log in to your account and try and reset the password online. This method is relatively more straightforward than the ones mentioned before.

Although, you require an alternate email account or phone number already linked with your Microsoft account for this method. If you haven’t linked these essentials with your Microsoft account, then try for other alternative methods.

Using MSDaRT

Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, aka MSDaRT, helps professionals in IT fields to recover unstable computers. Though DaRT is not free, this method still is short and efficient.

Boot up your computer along with the DaRt Recovery CD/Disk. Launch the provided built-in Locksmith Wizard tool. This enables you to reset the password of any local account in Windows 10.

Reset password using PCUnlocker

You can use third-party apps like PCUnlocker to unlock any Windows computer. You are provided with an image file that can be booted and written/burnt to a CD or any external data drive using freeware like Daemon Tools lite or ISO2DISC.

You can see all the local accounts and reset their passwords after booting the image file from ‘PCUnlocker Live CD (or USB)’.

Resetting to a Previous State

If your hard drive is encrypted with software like ‘BitLocker’ and you don’t want to use ‘Windows 10 password reset software’ then, try to restore your computer; to the point when you last changed its password.

However, software installed after the last restore point has to be installed once again. Even if nothing mentioned above works, you can always format your entire PC.

Although, after doing this, all of your saved data, programs and settings will be deleted. To restore your PC using this method:

  • While you press the ‘Shift’ key, click on the ‘Power’ button and click on the Restart button to the bottom-right corner of the dialogue box.
  • On the newly popped up screen; namely, choose an option, click on Troubleshoot and then select ‘Reset This PC’.
  • Select the option; ‘Remove everything’.

These are a few methods that you can use to ensure that you have easy access to your Windows 10 account if you by chance forget or lose your password again. Hope you find them insightful!
