Edited By Piyush, Reviewed By Shashank

With the advent of technology and advancement in the field of science, humans have evolved as successful survivors.

Today, almost every person interacts with some of the other digital screens that are a source of harmful blue light.

We have developed technology according to our needs and are too dependent on it for our day-to-day lives.

TVs, mobile phones, tablets, monitors, laptops, etc. have become an integral part of our personal and professional life.

How to Use a Blue Light Filter for PC

But, every coin has two sides, and likely so, the modern wonders bring both the benefits and harmful effects. By the completion of this article, you will be well-versed with blue lights and its harmful effects.

What is Blue Light?

Light is a form of energy that travels as intensity waves. The light visible to the naked eye lies in the range of the visible spectrum. Blue light is a high-intensity light falling in the short wavelength range of the visible spectrum.

The high-energy waves have shorter wavelengths like the Ultraviolet (UV) rays, which lie on the same spectrum but are quite invisible to the naked eye. On the contrary, low-energy waves have a large wavelength and lie on the opposite side of the visible spectrum.

Sources of Blue Light

The tech-savvy world has surrounded itself with modern gadgets and screens, which keep them exposed to blue light all the time. Not just screens, the sun too produces blue light. The LED bulbs are also a great source of blue light. But, not all sources of blue light affect us as badly as our digital factors do.

Harmful Effects of Blue-light

The human eye is trained to sustain a definite amount of light at a time.

The amount and type of light entering our eyes determine the quality of the vision we have. The high-intensity blue light, if exposed to for too long, is dangerous for the eye. The following problems may arise if the eye is exposed to unnecessary blue light:

  1. 1
The prolonged exposure to blue light can dry up the fluid in the eye that causes redness and itching. It will ultimately result in high strain and loss of vision.
  2. 2
With high eye strain, there are chances of developing headaches, which can even become a permanent disorder.
  3. 3
Studies show that blue light exposure can lead to watery eyes and can also develop psychological disturbances.

Now that we know blue light and its harmful effects, we need to limit our exposure and generate awareness and preventive measures about blue light.

The Blue Light Filter

With an increase in the number of hours that the average person spends in front of a screen, there is a growing need to filter out the harmful blue light from our lives. A blue light filter can be a blockage between the eye and the screen.

The prime objective of the blue light filter is to block the high intensity of blue light from entering the eye.

Now, the blockage between the eye and the screen can be constructed by putting a physical barrier or controlling the emission of rays from the screen itself. The physical measures include mounting of a transparent blue light filter sheet or using a less blue light-emitting screen.

But, the most effective preventive measures against the blue light include the blue light filter app that can control the emission of harmful rays and make the screen viewing experience strain-free. Hence, we move forward with the ways we can use a blue light filter app on our PC and control its harmful effects.

Blue Light Filter for PC

Blue light emissions have grown exponentially with better screens and technology. The high definition screens emit an enormous amount of blue light, which constitutes our TVs, monitors, and even some high-end smartphones.

There are a variety of software that are available in the market that can provide a blue light filter. A majority of blue light filter software only reduces the brightness component and does not even reduce 10% of the blue light.

So, a critical aspect of finding an effective blue light filter is to choose good software.

The following section will inform you about the best and most reliable blue light filter apps for your PC.

Blue Light Filter for PC

Windows 10 Blue Light Filter

With the growing need for a blue light filtering technology, Microsoft first launched the inbuilt blue light filter in Windows 10 creators update (Build 15002) in 2016. This update adjusted the colour and reduced the temperature of the screen resulting in reduced blue light emissions.

Windows 10 braces the inbuilt blue light filter by the name of the Night Light feature. Follow the procedures given below to enable the blue light filter in Windows 10.

  1. 1
At the onset, open the Settings of your Windows 10 PC and search for display options.
  2. 2
Now, open the display options and find the Night Light option on the top. Toggle between the options to turn on and off the night light feature on your PC.
  3. 3
After you have switched the night light feature on, click on the blue light settings for further options.
  4. 4
Now, you need to click on the Turn On Now button that will enable Windows 10 to show warmer colours for better sleep at night. The slider determines the amount of warmth required for the screen. It is always advised to keep the slider at 50% for maximum efficiency and less extremism.
  5. 5
Lastly, you can set the amount of night light by adjusting the slider that is best suited for your eye.

Note: Windows 10 also provides a feature that can set a schedule for the hours when the night light will be enabled automatically, according to the time of sunset or sunrise in your region. Also, there can be a custom hour schedule for enabling night light automatically.

You now know how to enable the night light feature in Windows 10 and reduce the blue light emissions to save your eyes from unnecessary strain and watering. But, what about the older versions? Do they have a similar built-in filter? If not, then how to reduce the blue light emission from those screens.

Read the following section to know how to filter the blue light from any PC running the older versions of Windows.

Blue Light Filter Software for PC

The older versions of Windows did not have any built-in blue light control features. The absence of this feature gave birth to the development of various softwares that provided blue light filtering. We bring you a list of some of the best and high-rated blue light filtering apps for PC.

1. Iris Mini

Iris Mini is a third-party app that provides a blue light filter for systems running on older versions of Windows. Iris Mini reduces the colour temperature of the screen resulting in lower emission of blue light.

The prime advantage of Iris Mini is that, though it reduces the colour temperature, it does not change the flickering speed of the monitor. The flickering speed of monitor screens is very fast, and hence, unnoticeable to the eye. Most monitor manufacturers control the brightness with the flickering rate.

Now when the flickering rate is reduced, the emissions grow strong due to longer emission duration, making it worse for the eye.

Hence, Iris Mini reduces the blue light emission without changing the brightness and flickering speed of the monitor. Iris Mini supports three modes in which you can enable the blue light filter:

  • Automatic: The software adjusts its colour temperature according to day and night. In the day, brightness is 100%, and, at night, it is generally 80%.
  • Manual: This mode enables you to customize the brightness that best suits our environmental conditions and surroundings.
  • Paused: This mode pauses the blue light filter and enables standard light emission from the screen.

Note: Iris Mini is a free software for Windows and Mac. The standard features of the software can be upgraded for better filtering with the Iris Pro that gives better control over the blue light emissions.

2. f.lux

f.lux is the second-highest-rated software for blue light filtering in PCs. The software is free for both Windows and Mac. f.lux makes the computer screen adaptive with the time and space of the monitor. The screen automatically sets up the warmth once you tell it the exact conditions.

This software has the feature of tweaking the other electrical appliances of the room to maintain the most-apt environment.

3. Redshift

A redshift is a third-party software that sets the brightness of digital screens according to the position of the sun. During the daytime, the screen brightness matches the shiny sun, and, during the night, the screen smoothly transitions from high to low light.

The software provides smooth transitions between different types of surroundings.

4. Lightbulb

The lightbulb is one of the most extensive power-user software that provides a tonne of options for pro users. The software features options like gamma radiation, transitioning, etc. for a powerful customized screen. The screen transits from very bright natural light in the day to artificial dim light in the night.

The lightbulb has minimal impact on the computer performance and a variety of customization options.

5. G.lux

G.lux is the unofficial and free version of the f.lux software that automatically changes the colour temperature and sets the brightness accordingly. The monitors that are typically daylight-balanced interfere with the sleep routines when used after sunset.

Hence, G.lux provides extensive customisation features for usage at different times and better protection. G.lux is the only alternative to f.lux for people who don’t have f.lux support or the required access. Also, it is a single extension for millions of chrome users.

Precautions and Taking Care of Your Eyes

Here was the list of the best softwares which filters blue light from the screens. You can download the softwares from the web/ store. Further, there are many ways with which we can reduce the exposure to blue light with simple habits and preventive measures at the elementary level.

Here are some ways by which we can take precautions and better care of our eyes:

Precautions and Taking Care of Your Eyes

1. Optimal Screen Distance

One of the reasons why blue light affects us more than it should is the distance between the eye and the screen. People generally are closer to the screen than they should be and are exposed to a higher intensity.

There should be an optimal distance between the eye and the screen so that you do not feel any strain or itching.

2. Using Filter Screen Covers

Blue light is located on the shorter wavelength side of the visible spectrum. These high-intensity waves can be stopped by external filtering sheets, which are generally made of plastic. A transparent sheet effectively provides lower blue light exposure, while some coloured sheets provide advanced protection.

3. Using Blue Light Filtering Glasses

While using a PC, you can wear a filtering glass that blocks the harmful blue light from entering the eyes. These glasses are usually temporary and need replacement from time to time.

4. Optimal Screen Angle

The screen angle is also a key factor in blue light effects. The monitor should be kept at an obtuse angle, that redirects the light at a certain angle to your eye. The combination of optimal distance and angle can be effectively used as a habit to reduce prolonged exposure.

Blue light is a short-length high-intensity wave that is radiated from almost every screen. This high-intensity light has adverse effects on the eye when exposed for a prolonged duration. Redness, itching, and watering can be some red flags that you need to identify the problems related to excessive blue light exposure.

There can also be severe headaches contributing to psychological problems. The removal of blue light from our screens is an easy task with the variety of options available for us. Windows 10 provides inbuilt support for blue light emission.

The older versions may use software like f.lux, Lightbulb, Redshift, etc. for regulating the blue light radiation from their screens. Moreover, small habits of virtue and carefulness towards exposure can further reduce the harmful effects of the blue light.
