What is an Inverter AC?

Edited by Piyush

If you are looking to buy an air conditioner in your house, you must be doing some research before zeroing upon which one you should buy.

While doing your research, you must have come across a new term – Inverter AC. So, let's understand what Inverter AC is?

Inverter AC is the latest AC technology in the market. Thanks to the electronic evolution, the AC industry has undergone a tremendous shift.

Inverter ACs are the current trend in the market. Inverter AC is designed, keeping in mind the electricity consumption part. You will be amazed to know that it can save approximately 30-50% of your electricity bill than regular AC.

Inverter AC

To know which AC is the best since 2016, BEE has started to give ratings to AC, but earlier, they used to provide a different rating to the inverter and non-inverter AC. But in 2018, this pattern was revised. Now, BEE gives a merged rating to both inverter and non-inverter AC.

How does the Inverter AC work?

Before we understand inverter AC, we must understand what inverter is. An inverter is a device which, in the simplest term, is used to control frequency. An inverter is used in almost every household and it controls the voltage, temperature, and current.

Inverter technology in AC works on the electromotor compressors. The inverter is used to regulate the compressor motor's speed, which in turn controls the temperature. The DC inverter unit consists of a variable frequency drive, which further contains an adjustable electric inverter.

This adjustable electric inverter controls the electrometer's speed, which is the compressor and the heating or cooling device. The drive is responsible for converting the incoming AC into DC and then using a modulation technique, electric inverter produces a current of a desired frequency.

Thus, when you use a non-inverter AC, the temperature keeps on fluctuating whereas it is not the case with inverter AC. In inverter AC, the temperature remains constant, and thus the cooling also remains constant. The microcontroller is responsible for air temperature in both the cases and gets it adjusted according to the compressor's speed.

Inverter air conditioning techniques are highly recommended these days. They are considered to be quite efficient when compared to non-inverter air conditioners. Since the voltage fluctuations are eliminated; thus, spare parts of the air conditioner last quite long, and the shelf life also increases.

Other than that, the customer satisfaction is high because cooling is the same throughout the night. Temperature does not change, and thus the cooling remains constant. As a result, inverter AC is quite silent. They create much less noise when compared to the non-inverter AC.

They also operate on a lower operating cost, and they have a much lesser breakdown than non-inverter AC. But while buying, you might observe that inverter ACs are bit costlier than non-inverter ACs, but with a reduction in the electricity bill, this cost is justified.

Benefits of Inverter Air conditionerff

The inverter air conditioner comes with several benefits and a higher price tag. So, if you want to go ahead with inverter air conditioners then read the following major benefits of the same -

  • Strong and powerful – Inverter air conditioners are known to operate in their full capacity right from the time it is switched on. This results in achieving the set temperature much more quickly as compared to the non-inverter air conditioners. For instance, in a closed study, we have observed that a non-inverter AC takes 15 minutes to reach 22 degrees, whereas non-inverter AC takes 9 minutes.
  • Reduction in electricity consumption – Once the desired indoor temperature has been achieved, inverter AC is known to lower its capacity to regulate the same temperature. As a result, inverter AC is much more energy-efficient when compared to non-inverter AC. In contrast, non-inverter AC starts or stops the compressor many times to maintain the required temperature.
  • Comfortable – Inverter air conditioners are highly comfortable when compared to non-inverter air conditioners. Inverter air conditioners are known to adjust to the capacity as per the air conditioning load and the difference in the desired temperature and the current temperature of the room. This makes it score full points when it comes to the comfort level.
  • No noise – Inverter AC is quite silent because they operate at a very low speed. Even if you go for split inverter AC then also other than the compressor sound, you won’t hear any other noise from the AC. It’s silent operation is one of the biggest pros.
  • Sound sleep – Since the same temperature is maintained throughout the night; thus, your sleep is not at all disturbed. Normally, the sleep gets disturbed on a hot and humid day when the AC temperature fluctuates. But thanks to inverter AC this never happens and thus, you can enjoy a break free and peaceful sleep with an inverter AC.

How does an Inverter AC reduces electricity bills?

Since it’s a very important debate when it comes to electricity bills and AC, thus we have decided to dig deeper here. Since, the voltage fluctuations are eliminated in such ACs, thus the cooling requirement is lower and the device also pumps less gas.

As a result, less quantity of heat is then distributed to the condenser. As a result, your condenser is much cooler, and thus there is much less pressure on the condenser. Also, the compressor draws much less current, and thus the compressor is much more efficient.

Some other important observations

  • Inverter AC works best when you go for a large tonnage requirement.
  • Undersized inverter AC will never save your electricity bills, whereas oversized inverter AC is a big saving.
  • You must keep using the inverter Ac for a longer period rather than switching it on and off. Repeatedly turning changing the power mode will not reduce the electricity bill.

Are Inverter ACs slow in operation?

Some people also are of the view that inverter AC cools quite slowly. But this is not true. Let us explain to you how. Non-inverter AC is fixed speed AC, whereas inverter AC has variable speed. Non-inverter AC has a compressor that can be “ON” and “OFF” both whereas inverter AC has their compressor at “ON” mode only.

Non-inverter AC is specifically designed to cool during the peak summer times, and thus they are oversized all the time. The overcooling is the biggest drawback of this AC.

For example, if you have kept your AC temperature at 25, then it will further lower down your room temperature to 22 or 23. But then you may ask what is the use of thermostat then?

Well, the thermostat is known to switch the compressor when the outside temperature has reached 25. But before that, the compressor does the job of converting from liquid to gas and then again from gas to liquid, and then the compressor compresses it.

But in this case, the refrigerant is much more, and the liquid in the room is quite less. Thus, there is not enough heat in the room to convert the liquid into a gas, and it keeps moving as the liquid. Now, the thermostat comes in the picture.

It detects the temperature and switches off the compressor, whereas the refrigerant is still in the liquid state. It absorbs the heat in the room and convert it into gas; bringing the room below the set temperature. Hence, inverter AC cools at an optimum level whereas non-inverter AC cools more than the temperature set.
